To celebrate Miss Brenda's birthday we took a family trip to the Illinois v. Mizzou Busch Braggin' Rights Game in St. Louis. Unfortunately the five of us couldn't cheer loud enough to lead the Illini on to victory.

Simplicity
Tonight I had a beloved but rare opportunity. It was perfect. A night off...clear skies...warm weather...and my favorite place in Memphis, Mud Island. Mud Island isn't really an island, it's more of a peninsula and despite it's name it's a beautiful getaway in the midst of a metropolitan area. I love it. Tonight I had time, I saw the chance and I seized it. I love to be outside so after a full day at the ballpark I headed to the island with my roller blades and my ipod. It was great, no breeze made the roll easier and relaxing which is really what I was going for as opposed to a workout. It's a beautiful evening so there were lots of people out. Babies in strollers, little kids walking hand in hand with their moms and dads...all ages and races.
After 5.5 miles or roller blading I wasn't ready to leave so I switched into my tennis shoes and walked down by the Mississippi River until I found a park bench in direct line of the sun which was getting ready to set. It was perfect. To my left there's the I-40 bridge with cars zooming past it. I've driven over that bridge many times and it can be kind of scary when you're in 3 lanes of traffic, most of which are semis. But from where I'm sitting all of the automobiles look pretty small and less intimidating. Right in front of me is the river, backed up by the western sky. The water is calm, except for the interruption of the occasional passing barge, and the sun is huge. The clear sky is starting to turn shades of light orange that grow brighter and more vibrant as the sun sinks lower behind the trees. As I'm drinking this scene in I can feel the love of God. The Lord of all the earth, the Creator of the Universe, the One who named the stars and spoke them into place, is mindful of ME. It never ceases to amaze me and moments like this are a perfect reminder of that amazing love.
I love simplicity. Sitting on the bench watching the sun set I'm with Paul when he says, "I've determine to know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." I want to be like that. This world doesn't matter. Where I live, what I do for a living, how much money I make or don't make...none of it matters. What matters is that I know Jesus and in knowing Him share in the sufferings of His death so that I might share in the glory of what is to come. Simplicity. All I need to do is passionately pursue Christ. Nothing else matters. When my focus is on Christ things don't always turn out perfectly or the way I'd want, but I can rest in Him knowing that He's got it under control. I get so wrapped up in what's going on around me...especially when it comes to my career and future in this world. Ginny Owens has a song that echoes my heart's cry when she says, "All I want to do is give this life to You and let Your will be done cause it's all I want to do". Simple, yes, but not easy.
Sunsets and clear skies. Time to sit and rest. To know Him and Love Him. To passionately pursue Christ. Simple, but never easy.
